Alytus „Sakalėlis“ Primary school is situated in Lithuania, Dzūkija region. Dzūkija is one of four Lithuanian regions having its own unique dialect, traditions, songs, folklore, crafts and lifestyle.
Alytus „Sakalėlis“ Primary school has chosen to pursue its educational goals with a focus on ethnic culture. The school’s principal together with the school staff has prepared an ethnocultural program which is incorporated into the curriculum subjects and in the informal education by the school’s teachers. In their extra-curricular activities, students learn old traditional crafts including band weaving, pottery, felting, needlework; they learn to play a Lithuanian national instrument Baltic psaltery, sing authentic songs, perform folk dances. The school’s folk ensemble Sakalėlis, which has already released a CD, is renowned at the local, regional and national levels. The school has its own flag, school anthem and a logo.
The vision of Alytus „Sakalėlis“ Primary school is to create a school of high pedagogical culture building on the national ethnical values; to unleash children’s natural talents and help each student progress towards becoming a free, responsible and virtuous individual.
The mission the Primary school is to foster community spirit, promote the teaching of spiritual values, enrich the creative needs of children’s self-expression and their spiritual life, and teach them a harmonious coexistence with nature and environment.
The school in total has a of 293 students. The school staff includes 12 teachers, 5 subject teachers (music, art, physical education, religion, English language), 5 class teachers doing extra-hour teaching (working with students after school), and 3 specialists including a speech therapist-special pedagogue, a psychologist’s assistant and a social pedagogue.
Alytus „Sakalėlis“ Primary school creates its unique identity through creative use of children’s artistic pieces for decorating the classroom and school interior. The majority of the community members have an input in creating the school image and in spreading the word about our school with outstanding art pieces, achievements and ethnic events.
